In 2019, Harden Village Council became one of the first rural communities in Yorkshire to declare a climate emergency, joining hundreds of larger councils (including Bradford) and the UK Parliament. We are keen to work with local residents, groups and partners to continue to bring this to life.
Our overall aims
We want work with local residents, businesses and community groups to help Harden become carbon neutral, so we deliver least harm and maximum benefit to the environment. This will ensure our village is playing its part in addressing the global crisis, while benefitting local health, wellbeing, inclusion, resilience, our surroundings and nature.
We also want to share what we’re doing with others, helping to show that rural communities too can play an important part in moving towards net zero emissions, reducing pollution and enhancing the natural environment.
Local Actions in 2025
- Village warden picked up litter every month around the village to keep our environment clean and tidy.
- We supported Harden Green Action Group by providing a venue, and materials for litter picking day. Some councillors took part at litter picking event on Harden Moors. Unfortunately, due to lack of support from residents Harden Green Action group decided to de-formalise the group and instead adopted something similar to the Green Drinks concept which is an informal social evening where friends meet.
- We supported Friends of Goit Stock Wood. Councillors distributed leaflets and helped with the cake sale fundraising event at the Malt Shovel.
- We provided 4 planters with plants around the village.
- We funded supplies of garden products such as bulbs, rakes, bench etc. to Moor Edge Drying Ground Community Project.
- We have provided the council’s Thermal Camera to 14 residents, whom appreciated the free availability of the camera, which in turn helped them to identify where they are losing heat in their homes.
- We supported the local shop providing InPost Locker, for residents to have easy access to pick up and drop off their parcels. This meant reduction in carbon emissions, and traffic congestion.
- We are in the process of purchasing two Vehicle Activated, Speed Indicator Signs to calm traffic in the village.
- We are seeking the possibility of an Allotment space in the village and are preparing for an application to the Bradford Council.
Below are some actions that individuals can take to combat climate change:
- Add plant-based diet to your food
- Reduce household food waste, and if possible, compost it
- Reuse bags for shopping
- Reduce the number of clothing & textile items bought each year
- Donate unwanted items to the charities or use websites like freecycle
- Change halogen light bulbs to LED lights
- If possible, insulate your home
- If possible, use solar power or air pumps to heat your house.
- Reduce number of flights
- Car share when possible
