VE Day 80 – A Shared Moment of Celebration
To commemorate the 80th Anniversary of VE Day, Harden Village Council is putting on an exhibition about the Second World War and VE Day in the village.
The exhibition will be at Harden Memorial Hall on Saturday, May 10, from 10am to 4 pm and in Bingley Library from May 19.
VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe and WWII as a whole on 8 May1945.
Information about the men who are commemorated on the War Memorial, and some who survived, will be included, as well as information about food rationing and activities like the Soldiers’ Comfort Fund.
Several men from Harden took part in significant events like the sinking of HMS Repulse which was one of the worst disasters in British naval history and bombing raids into enemy territory. One resident was awarded the Distinguished Flying Medal and another the Military Cross.
The exhibition will also include material from the First World War taken from a previous exhibition in 2014.
Everyone welcome to attend. No charge.
