Greenwood Holmes

West Riding Regiment

Greenwood Holmes was born in 1892. In 1911, he lived at 8 Lane End, Harden with his mother Emma and sister Sarah.

He joined the 6th Battalion of the West Riding Regiment in 1912 giving his occupation as Spring Maker.

His medical records have survived from which it is clear that he had a heart problem and was discharged as permanently unfit in 1914 due to an ‘irregular action of the heart’ It was also noted that his chances of finding employment was ‘a quarter, if at all.’

Despite this disability, he married in 1919 and died in 1976 at the age of 84!
